Dear netmake - please fix the dictionary problems - help text deleted

Upon database tables update from DICTIONARY all my Help Text in the involved Apps was deleted. arghrhghahgrhghahgh!
Lost about 2 hours of my work :frowning:

PLEASE FIX THIS

Generally speaking the dictionary is full of bugs and needs lots of attention. Have I mentioned the SELECT fields which are lost upon update ? NO? THEN FIX THIS TO PLEASE

I usually use the data dictionary only to labels and i do not see any error. In one ocasion i had to change some tables (add and drop fields) and i only have to update the data dictionary. Would you like to show me your reported situation by sharing your desktop with me and simulating this situation? If you accept my offer to help please send me a message and we can schedule.

Hello,

Issue reported to our bugs team.

regards,
Bernhard Bernsmann

steps to reproduce:

  1. create a table_A
  • ID(int)
  • Name(char10)
  1. create a table_B
  • ID(int)
  • LocationName(char20)
  1. Create a Grid / form (wizard)
  2. Go to ā€œNameā€ field in Table_A and change type to SELECTION then do lookup into Table_B (typical scenraion)
  3. Add help text for the Name field
  4. Go to you SQL database change the column: Name(char10) to Name(varchar20)
  5. Sync your dictionary and apps with new version of your dB

RESULT:
-help is gone

  • selection (Type) is gone

yes, you can go and fix it manually rather easy, but if you have your fields stored in hundreds of tables it becomes a nightmare. I have a dB with over 350 tables :frowning:

yes you can preserver field type in DCT but if you changing the column from CHAR() to BOLEAN() you must use the type.

=================================================================================================
SOLUTION:

  • keep the help text in external (from SC) database. This way the help text can be reused. The way the Manual Selection Box is done would be sufficient.
  • add FREEZE attribute to each column property so the columns can be protected
  • add User_Prompt on change (if I click NO then the property will be preserved)

perhaps there might be also other solutionsā€¦

Arthur

Dear MR Bartho

thank for reporting but,ā€¦

I have reported this problem with SC6 (yes, yes SC6), so it was roughly about 2-3 years ago.
YOU REPLIED WITH THE SAME MESSAGE!

CAN YOU TELL US IN PUBLIC WHAT WAS REPLY TO YOUR MESSAGE FROM bugs team ?

BTW. I have reported number of other problems, which (as you stated were reported to Bugs Team). Out of them I do not see even one that has been fixed :frowning:
So please, unless you prove the Bugs Team exists (by showing what was fixed) do not post replies like that. Trying to earn some time and be polite will not help, because the product needs fix.
We are all developers here and we all understand that some bugs are very hard to find/fix and some are not even a SC problems but they are cause by browsers VS OS issues. There are however bugs which are trivial and could be fixed in a matter of minutes or hours.

Is the problem described here a serious bug ? NO, because I still can work. therefore I was patient for over 2 years hoping it will gets its attention.
If I would keep my customer with the bug in software for 3 years (with no fix) I would definitely loose my reputation (despite he can use the software). He will also make me loos many potential leads in the future.
Bad messages fly with the lightning speed! I hope you understand my point, but understanding is not enough. Replying (like you do) is not enough. WE NEED ACTION !

BTW. I would like to ask if there is any record tracking of what user reported errors were fixed by Net Make and when ?

Arthur

Now I understand. I use the data dic only to put the labels fields. When I sync I only check the labels.

Problem is that by default all checkboxes are set. So if you rely on default behaviour you are supprised of the mishaps that happen.

I must agree

It would be a good idea if the scriptcaseā€™s clients could have reading access of bugtracker tool, so we could follow the resolving proccess of a bug. And this also could resolve the repeated reported bugsā€™s problem.

Exactly ! We need to know what is fixed and what is not. As I mentioned it is not only a checkbox problem in Dictionary, it is also HELP that is removed !

Arthur

Hello Paulo,

That is a great suggestion. We are currently discussing the possibility of having a open bugtracker so our customers can keep track of bugā€™s status.

regards,
Bernhard Bernsmann

Very good Bernardo. Iā€™ll wait this suggestion too eager.

Yes, I would welcome that. Itā€™s a very old request:
