How to make a grid link open record in form when form starts in insert mode

I have several forms that I need to start in insert mode when run by themselves. I also have grids linked to those forms to edit. If I use sc_apl_conf to start the form in insert mode then the edit link from the grid doesn’t bring up the record and starts in insert mode. Is there any way I can have my cake and eat it too?

I guess the only way to accomplish this is to have duplicate apps for edit and insert. That is not practical so I’m going to take a different approach.

Link the form with a key field that don’t exist ( i.e. -1 )
