I’m trying to find some info on what the OPTIONAL parameter is for in Global Variable settings.
HELP files is completely outdated and does not even show this setting.
Any ideas ?

Optional means, that this var is … optional. If you have an IN global var, and you don’t specify a value for it, application stops loading and an error should be displayed, but I’m not sure why right now is not giving me an error while testing it.
If you set Optional as checked, this variable will not be validated
