SC8 - Update problem

Just installed SC8 - all ok sooooo far - though I’ve not done anything in anger yet.

However - I did want to try and see if any updates were available.

I first tried - from the SC Help menu - “Check Version” and got a dialog saying: “It was not possible to contact the updating server, please try again later.”

I then tried - from Help | Update Version - and from the screen that appeared clicked on “Check SciptCase Update”.

This dialog then appeared:

… clicking the link in that dialog showed:

Even with those dialogs the main screen looked okay. I then clicked “Search for Updates” - and after a short while SC told me there were 2666 updates to download!

When I click to download I then get this screen which regularly refreshes but with no progress:

At the same time this dialog appeared:

And the link displayed this message:

So - overall - it looks like SC8 updating is not working properly???

Hello,

The folder of your Scriptcase not writable. You must give permission 777 or 755 (depending on the hosting you are using) recursively for any folder Scriptcase.
Note that lacks a w between the r-x.

Thats not the problem John, the permissions are OK, the web service run with user www-data, this user got perm to write on any folder.

Lol! I am extremely doubtful that SC support will help you much with permissions on Linux. Their installer dumps this on your filesystem world-writeable, owned by root… You know what that means: they didn’t think a Linux build specialist was worth the $$.

My default SC v8 install runs as daemon:daemon on CentOS 6. You don’t get to pick this. It can be changed, but that’s the installer default.

Better permissions than ScriptCase’s default “I AM MICROSOFT! YOU WOULD NOT DARE HACK ME!” permissions model are easy:

First, find out who runs the SC v8 Apache service:

ps -ef | grep NetMake

On my box, both v7 and v8 are running as user daemon.

Let’s set some sane permissions:

find /opt/NetMake/v8 -type d -exec chmod 770 {} ; # Set directories to rwx for Owner/Group, deny others
find /opt/NetMake/v8 -type f -exec chmod 660 {} ; # All files are rw-rw- for Owner/Group, deny others
find /opt/NetMake/v8 -name *.so* -exec chmod 750 {} ; # All dynamic libraries are rwx for owner, r-x for group
chown -R daemon:daemon /opt/NetMake/v8 # Everything is owned by the NetMake web server, and those in the daemon group

I hope this helps prevent someone from losing all their hard work due to negligent install permissions + bored teenagers.

But this doesn’t change the fact that the update server is apparently down.

Hello,

Currently the automatic update service version 8 is disabled for maintenance.
Will soon be available to all users, while it is possible to perform a manual update.
