I’m new since 3 weeks, liking Scriptcase so far, verry well. There are then languages to compleetly work with Scriptcase in. I’m strongly interressed in working with DUTCH language, so i could learn it to my grandson too. Are some people working on that translation? Are is there yet a working translation in Dutch? If the translation is being done now, and they could have a aiding person more, i could help with the translation.
Scriptcase itself is in english but the applications you build, you can build in multiple languages. All the standard texts are already translated in dutch. And you can easily build your application in dutch as it is described in the manuals/help files.
Hey Vroefkens,
Not too sure on if or when this’ll come, you’ll probably have to wait and see whether a SC employee comes by and is nice enough to answer it.
However I do have a bit of a comment on the subject. I’m dutch myself, 17 as of now (nothing but a number but thought I’d state it anyways), and I must say I get the idea and all but if I’d ever be in a sort like situation I’d probably opt for helping my (grand)son learn some English first and then get him into some programming stuff. I’m assuming he’s young so he should learn rather quick. Plus it’d give him a bit of a head start for his later education. This as English is and will be the main language used in programming no matter what, and just in case he might want to actually start doing some programming kind of education it’s probably best to start giving variables english names early on (my teachers prefered english variables).
And after all if it’d be up to me (some people are probably glad it isn’t however) English would become the main language used everywhere anyways. Although I suppose that’d be bad for the economy as it’d get all those poor translators fired.
Post scriptum: You might get a better answer just e-mailling the company, as most SC employee’s roaming the forum seem to be techhead’s (I might be wrong on that however).
To be honest, there needs to be a serious customer base before SC would even consider translating the development environment into Dutch. We would be the first to support. But for most Dutch developers English is not a problem at all so IMHO there’s very little need of that. Like ‘rr’ it’s very easy to make multilangual applications. Errors in the Dutch translation can be communicated for change.
Hello vroefkens.
I know there is a difference between Dutch and German, but I don’t know if the difference between them (I dont speak neither of those). Are they very different or if a dutch / german speaker can understand each other without major problems?
But you can enlight us if is easy / hard using SC in German so we can register your thougths about the major languages we use to develop with our tool.
About other languages (if anyone is wondering) we look at several points before adding it to SC’s interface from liscences registered in a country to contries that use the language as official one.
For the germanic area for example we opted for German because its the most used.
There are a lot of potencial languages we could add but translating our interface into a language needs a lot of effort and we need a strong native community to help us doing such things since we can’t just throw the texts to a google translator for example.
Hope I helped.
I don’t believe that there will be any Dutch developer who will put Scriptcase in German for development. All Dutch are English oriented. Every Dutch kid will learn German at school, and it’s not an easy language for the Dutch because of difficult Grammar. But Dutch is very difficult for a German. Since lots of studies are given in English nowadays, the university I work for is slowly moving from Dutch to English even in direct communication. I worked in the ICT since the late 70ties and I never have seen anybody using a Dutch version of any development environment. I know that French and Germans are very bound to their own language, in NL this is completely different. Main reason is that we always have been a very small country and to do business we have to communicate. We are used to adapt ourselves. I’m not saying that SC will never be in Dutch, but I simply cannot believe that there will be a market for that or that it would be widely used within Dutch devs. Even if it would be available I honestly believe that by far the most will use the English version.
Many dutch are fluent in german but in the german language you have to be fully aware of the character set!! There is a set of special characters that are needed. So be aware of that point too…
True. I for myself am pretty fluent in German, but I still don’t see myself working in a german translation. I know that counts for you too.
Thanks for the responses. I also think, that my grandsons will use Scriptcase sooner in English, then it will exist in Dutch, and even as i would myself participate in the traduction as well. I’m a Flemish Belgian, retired informatician, worked for 45 years in a real Belgian Bank, almost the only left. Being a Flemish we are more toucht then the Netherlands that our language exist soo poor in good softwares. So i tried again to change this, but it won’t work again. I thought that because scriptcase is complete and very good working, scriptcase is really a fast learning tool, it could be a good tool for even children to create immediant complete good websites, and not the poor software thats sometimes sold as website creation, some graphic spull creating some static pages and thats all. But for young children, my oldest grandson is now ten, it would be good that it exists in their mother language. But like i said, h’ is young, maybe to young for scriptcase, and he will understand english in a couple of years, and he will learn the good things of programming, php and mysql and …
And yes, what it means for Belgium is that we are speaking three languages here, french, German and Dutch and we Dutchmen are again, the poor men.
And “Scriptcase EVEN for children” can be a new market, thats something for Albert from Aducom, to think about. And parents would buy everything there children ask… also Grandparents. My grandson ten years old asked himself a couple of months ago, to learn him making its own website. So a new world opens to Scriptcase, just by making the traduction in Dutch also for South Africa.
It’s a good point, we created the ‘logic’ language especially for young kids. But somehow we where not able to get enough schools interested to use it. It was a ‘language free’ language, that is, the statements where in the native language like ‘Dutch’, based on the logo language so it created pictures. Loads of compliments, but no real market. We had to drop support for it unfortunately.
Having said that, I don’t think that SC is a tool for small children. Main point is that designing a good database (which is a must for SC) is not an easy task, php is an english language and you cannot do without even if you can generate most of it. I think that the learning curve of the whole story is too steep for small kids. But in NL kids have English when they are in group 6 or 7 (I don’t know how it is in Belgium) which means that they learn basics from 10 years of age. My daughter of 11 knows quite a bit due to gaming too. But the overall needed knowledge (php, sql, database design) is too much for a 10 year old. I would recommend that if he wanted to start his own website he should start setting up a simple cms like e107.
Shure Albert, your right. Iban maded its own website as a small one, and he is pleased for the moment. Iban also is a model gamer and understand already some english. My point of view was all the long of live, if some one don’t understand something now, maybe in an hour, next day … You’r also right that a good database is the basic and needed by scriptcase. A good database i created them all my live, so we trich there somewhat. But let us close for the moment this discussion, because scriptcase wouldn’t work in Dutch for the next ten years, and the children needs and wishes are so different, but let us end with the statement that scriptcase is a wonderfull software, and lets continue with it testing its limits all the time.
